About Canis Major
 | Canis major is the most well known of the dog related constellations. It contains
the star Sirius or the "Dog Star" which is the brightest star in the night sky. |
 | There are three recognized constellations of dogs. Canis Major, Canis Minor and Canes Vanatici. |
 | Canis Major and Minor are Orion's hunting dogs. To find Canis Major look
for Orion's belt, follow the direction it points West to Sirius. The other canine
constellation, Canes Vanatici, represents the hunting dogs held on a leash by Bootes
hunting the bears Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. |
 | Canis Major is one of the best constellations to look at through a
telescope for finding and viewing Messier objects (deep sky objects) and the best one is
right in the middle of the dogs' chest with the exciting name of M41, it is what is called
an open cluster. |
 | The named stars in Canis Major are: Sirius (Alpha CMa), Murzim (Beta
CMa), Muliphen (Gamma CMa), Wezen (Delta CMa), ADARA (Epsilon CMa), Furud (Zeta CMa),
Aludra (Eta CMa). |
